Matthew 1
This Christmas, let’s celebrate Christ, who is the promised seed and born of a virgin, to be our God who dwells with us.
1. Christmas is “merry” because Jesus is the promised seed (v. 1-17).
“Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, ‘And to offsprings,’ referring to many, but referring to one, ‘And to your offspring,’ who is Christ.”—Galatians 3:16
“Moreover, the LORD declares to you that the LORD will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.”—2 Samuel 7:12-13,16-17
2. Christmas is merry because Jesus was born of a virgin (v. 18-21).
“Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong slavery.”—Hebrews 2:14-15
3. Christmas is merry because Jesus is Immanuel (v. 22-25).
